Outside the performance season, volunteers will contribute to a wide range of maintenance and preparation tasks across the theatre grounds. Activities include dismantling stage constructions, organizing and repairing props, cleaning and arranging storage spaces and the prop warehouse, and preparing the audience area for the winter months. Additional responsibilities involve painting, general maintenance work, pruning trees, collecting leaves, and helping keep the entire venue in excellent condition.
The hosting organization is the Open-Air Theatre Heidenheim, the second-largest open-air theatre in Southern Germany. Located on the scenic Castle Hill in Heidenheim an der Brenz and surrounded by beautiful forests, the theatre welcomes up to 1,100 spectators each season.
Operated by a non-profit association, the theatre is excited to once again host an international team of volunteers. This opportunity is ideal for anyone interested in theatre production and curious to discover what happens behind the scenes. Every day offers a unique chance to experience the backstage world while supporting the preservation of this remarkable cultural venue.
Accommodation, Food and Transport
Volunteers will stay directly at the theatre complex, where the administration offices, workshop, café, and other facilities are located.
Accommodation consists of one large shared sleeping area with mattresses provided on the floor. Shower facilities and a kitchen are available in the same building. Laundry facilities exist but are limited. Please note that all volunteers will share the same sleeping space, and separate rooms are not available.
Participants will prepare their own meals throughout the project. This includes purchasing groceries, cooking together, and cleaning the kitchen after use, encouraging teamwork and shared responsibility during daily life.
Participant Profile
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who enjoy practical outdoor work and are comfortable taking part in physical, hands-on tasks.
Applicants should be open to meeting people from different cultural backgrounds, willing to communicate in English, and interested in intercultural exchange. A positive attitude, flexibility, and a readiness to work collaboratively are the most important qualities for this project.
