Railway Heritage Volunteer Project in the Netherlands 2026 | International Volunteering Opportunity
An exciting international volunteering opportunity is available in the Netherlands for young people interested in railway heritage, outdoor work, and cultural exchange. Throughout the project, volunteers will contribute to the preservation and maintenance of a historic railway while working alongside an international team in a unique environment.
This hands-on experience combines practical conservation work, teamwork, and intercultural learning, allowing participants to discover the historical significance of the railway while developing valuable personal and practical skills.
Project Description
During the project, volunteers will carry out maintenance activities at several locations along the historic railway line, ensuring that each working day offers a different experience.
Every morning begins at Simpelveld Railway Station, located within walking distance of the accommodation. From there, participants travel by maintenance train to the designated work sites.
Since the railway also operates regular passenger services, volunteers should be prepared for a flexible daily schedule that may vary according to train operations.
The primary responsibilities include:
- Installing and repairing protective fencing along the railway.
- Pruning shrubs and small trees to maintain safe railway corridors.
- Painting historic railway bridges.
- Restoring station fences and outdoor benches.
- Supporting general maintenance tasks that help preserve the railway’s historical character.
By participating in these activities, volunteers will contribute directly to the conservation of an important piece of Dutch railway heritage while working in the beautiful countryside.
Accommodation, Meals and Daily Living
Participants will stay in a traditional scouting center located on the outskirts of Simpelveld, close to the project site.
The accommodation includes:
- Separate shared dormitories for male and female volunteers.
- Air mattresses provided by the organizers.
- A fully equipped communal kitchen.
- Indoor and outdoor common areas for games, social activities and group gatherings.
- Outdoor facilities suitable for barbecues and evening events.
Volunteers are required to bring their own sleeping bag.
Meals will be prepared collectively, with participants sharing cooking and cleaning responsibilities throughout the project. On certain days, local farmers may also prepare traditional meals for the volunteer group, providing an authentic cultural experience.
Training and Learning Experience
All participants will receive introductory training organized by SIW, helping them become familiar with the project, daily responsibilities and safety procedures before beginning the practical work.
The experience is designed to strengthen teamwork, practical problem-solving and collaborative working skills in an international environment.
