An exciting Erasmus+ Training Course titled “Solar Futures” will bring together participants who are interested in sustainable living, permaculture, community development, and climate action. The international programme is designed to provide practical knowledge and hands-on experience, enabling participants to transfer innovative ideas and environmental practices back to their own communities.
The training will gather 15 international participants and will take place at Casa Algaia, an off-grid permaculture and ecological living project located in the Zaragoza region of Spain.
Permaculture and the Future of Sustainable Living
The Solar Futures Training Course is inspired by the idea that humanity has spent most of its history living in close connection with nature. As climate change continues to reshape daily life across the world, many traditional ecological practices are becoming increasingly relevant for the future.
The selected venue reflects this philosophy. Inland Spain experiences extremely hot and dry summers, offering participants a realistic opportunity to experience environmental conditions that scientists expect to become more common across many parts of Europe.
Rather than focusing solely on theory, the programme encourages participants to explore practical ways of adapting to these realities through sustainable living practices.
What Will Participants Learn?
The training programme is structured around three interconnected learning areas that combine practical activities with personal development.
Permaculture and Ecological Land Practices
Participants will engage directly with soil, plants, and natural construction materials while learning about ecological design principles and bioconstruction techniques. Throughout the programme, they will gain practical experience by working closely with the natural environment.
Community Living and Emotional Resilience
The course also addresses the emotional and social dimensions of the climate crisis. Participants will reflect on environmental challenges while exploring methods for strengthening resilience, improving communication, and supporting collaborative decision-making within communities.
Special attention will be given to group dynamics and approaches that encourage solidarity and collective responsibility.
Storytelling and Creative Imagination
Another key component of the programme focuses on creativity and storytelling. Through movement, artistic expression, and narrative practices, participants will be encouraged to imagine hopeful and achievable futures rather than viewing environmental challenges solely through a negative lens.
The objective is to strengthen participants’ ability to inspire positive change within their own communities.
No Previous Experience Required
The programme does not require previous experience in permaculture or ecological living. Instead, it welcomes individuals who are open-minded, willing to engage in physical activities, and interested in experiencing a lifestyle that emphasizes simplicity, sustainability, and close interaction with nature.
Participants are also expected to embrace a phone-free environment during much of the training, allowing them to fully engage with both the learning process and the community experience.
A Practical International Learning Experience
Solar Futures has been intentionally designed as a small-scale international training course that prioritizes experiential learning and meaningful collaboration.
Accommodation will be simple, while the educational methodology emphasizes practical work, community participation, intercultural dialogue, and shared experiences.
Beyond acquiring new knowledge, participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with people from different countries, develop international networks, and build partnerships for future initiatives related to sustainability and youth work.
