The Environmental Conservation Volunteer Project offers international volunteers the opportunity to contribute to biodiversity conservation while gaining practical experience in one of Austria’s most valuable protected landscapes. Taking place in the Weinviertel Cliff Zone (Weinviertler Klippenzone), part of the European Green Belt along the Austrian–Czech border, the project combines environmental action, intercultural exchange, and non-formal learning.
About the Project
This international volunteering initiative focuses on preserving the unique dry grassland ecosystems of Lower Austria, which provide habitat for many rare and endangered plant and animal species. Without regular conservation work, shrubs and invasive plants gradually overtake these fragile landscapes, threatening native biodiversity.
Throughout the project, volunteers will actively participate in habitat restoration and ecological maintenance activities that directly support the long-term protection of these valuable natural areas.
By joining the project, participants contribute to the conservation of exceptional species, including the critically endangered Feather Grass (Stipa tirsa) and the Mountain Alcon Blue butterfly (Phengaris rebeli), while helping maintain one of Central Europe’s most important ecological corridors.
Volunteer Activities
Participants will work in protected grassland areas surrounded by the picturesque vineyards of Lower Austria. Practical conservation activities will include:
- Maintaining dry grassland habitats through seasonal mowing.
- Removing shrubs that threaten open grassland ecosystems.
- Controlling invasive (non-native) plant species.
- Supporting biodiversity conservation within protected natural areas.
- Working alongside international volunteers in a collaborative outdoor environment.
These hands-on tasks allow participants to make a tangible environmental impact while learning about habitat management and sustainable conservation practices.
Accommodation and Meals
Accommodation is intentionally simple, allowing volunteers to experience nature more closely.
- During the first week, participants will stay in shared tents.
- During the second week, accommodation will move to basic shared indoor facilities.
Meals will largely be prepared by the volunteer group. Cooking responsibilities will rotate daily, giving everyone the opportunity to contribute to community life.
Menus will be adapted whenever possible to accommodate dietary requirements, allergies, and food preferences. Meals will remain simple, with an emphasis on affordable and predominantly vegetarian ingredients.
Participant Profile
