Activity Overview
This team volunteering initiative is centered on eco-construction using locally-sourced, natural materials.
Our project involves enhancing The Crossroads’ facilities by crafting an outdoor communal area designated for meetings, social events, and meditation. Participants will acquire practical skills in woodworking, including construction techniques, wood preparation, sanding, varnishing, and tool usage.
We’ll employ a traditional cob wall technique known as bagladin. By the conclusion of this endeavor, all involved will have developed the ability to construct eco-friendly structures through direct, hands-on experience and the utilization of natural building materials from the vicinity.
Living Arrangements and Logistics
A group of 10 volunteers will reside in a distinct wing of a refurbished villa, complete with 8 twin bedrooms, a kitchen, sanitary amenities, and an edible garden.
Additionally, the nearby Leto family hotel offers 7 twin bedrooms and a shared space, available for both short and long-term volunteers, situated a mere 5-minute walk from the villa.
We are in the final stages of the villa’s renovation, which includes restoring historical elements and integrating new architectural enhancements.
Training Provided During the activity, participants will be trained in handling wooden structures, from construction to the finishing touches.
The bagladin method, a time-honored technique for cob walls, will be taught, involving the interlacing of split bamboo over a smaller wooden frame and filling it with cob to form a sturdy earth wall.
The training will cover installing windows, finalizing a fireplace, and flooring with clay and stones. A local scavenger hunt will be organized to source building materials like soil clay and bamboo.
Ideal Participants
We’re on the lookout for 10 dedicated volunteers, including 4 individuals with limited opportunities, eager to broaden their horizons and contribute to community advancement.
Selection will be based on their eagerness and interest in gaining expertise in permaculture, eco-construction, cultural events, sustainable transitions, arts, and fostering valuable networks like the regenerative movement.
Ideal candidates are those driven to become impactful change agents and collaborative team members, focused on personal and professional growth within a community setting.
