“European Culture(s) of Remembrance” – Special Focus: Czech Republic

The seminar aims to connect four key dimensions:
Investigating how major historical events are represented in local, regional, and national cultures of remembrance.
Examining how past and present remembrance practices shape political and social dynamics in the Czech Republic.
Providing insights into local approaches to historical civic education.
Creating opportunities for exchange, networking, and collaboration among participants.
📌 Themes & Programme Outline
Prague: Visit to the National Museum exhibition and a guided city walk to explore memorials and monuments linked to pivotal 20th-century events and figures.
Lety u Písku: Visit to the Memorial for Roma and Sinti Victims of the Holocaust, reflecting on the role of minority histories in national narratives.
Terezín: Exploration of one of Central Europe’s most significant Holocaust remembrance sites.
Participants will meet with memorial staff to discuss current challenges in presenting Holocaust history to contemporary audiences, highlighting how Jewish persecution is remembered and reinterpreted in Czech public memory.
Ústí nad Labem: Visit to the exhibition “Our Germans (Naši Němci)”, focusing on the history of the German-speaking population in Bohemia.
This final stop will open dialogue on Czech–German relations and how historical legacies shape today’s understanding of identity, belonging, and collective responsibility.

Together, these visits will provide participants with a multifaceted view of how the Czech Republic engages with the memory of the 20th century—from the Holocaust and minority experiences to the ongoing re-evaluation of national and transnational narratives within European remembrance culture.
