ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
The main objective of the Icelandic Forestry Association (IFA) and other forestry associations in Iceland is to restore the lost forest cover in Iceland, create green recreational areas, and preserve existing forest remnants.
IFA is set to host a group of ESC volunteers for a five-month period, from May to September.
Working under the guidance of a forestry-educated supervisor, the team will undertake various tasks, including planting and fertilizing small saplings, thinning and debranching older forests, and constructing and maintaining infrastructure such as paths and bridges.
Most of the work will be in the rural areas of southern Iceland, with occasional travel to other locations to collaborate with local forestry associations for one or two weeks. The tasks will be physically demanding, and participants should be prepared for challenging weather conditions.
ACCOMMODATION, FOOD, AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS
The volunteers’ base camp is situated in Úlfljótsvatn, a rural area rather than an urban setting.
Accommodation is provided in a rustic farmhouse equipped with modern utilities.
Úlfljótsvatn farm is approximately a 20-minute drive from the village of Selfoss, where essential services are available.
Participants will receive a card to purchase food and cook for themselves. The National Park of Þingvellir and various other interesting sites are nearby. The volunteer team will have access to a car for both work-related activities and leisure time.
TRAINING DURING THE ACTIVITY
Participants will receive training to carry out various tasks, including planting techniques and theories, safety protocols at work locations, use of forestry equipment, and the construction of paths and wooden/stone structures.
They will also gain insights into Icelandic culture and language.
PARTICIPANT PROFILE
Ideal participants should have an interest in nature and outdoor physical work.
While knowledge in natural sciences is beneficial, it is not a prerequisite.
Participants need to be capable of independent living and working while also being effective team players.
Good social skills, a positive mindset, and motivation are essential. Proficiency in English is required.
Individuals facing fewer opportunities are encouraged to apply; however, it’s crucial to note that participants must be in good mental and physical health to undertake the tasks. Commitment to the entire program duration is mandatory.
