Financial Support
Accommodation: Near Hongo Campus, provided by UTokyo. Some labs may require commuting by train.
Stipend: 270,000 JPY to budget for food and personal trips.
Travel Cost: Economy-class airfare to Tokyo or round-trip train tickets for domestic students. The route and schedule will be determined in consultation with the program office. Changes due to personal reasons require reimbursement of the initial travel costs to the University of Tokyo.
All students must arrange their own private health and travel insurance.
Neither the Amgen Foundation nor the University of Tokyo provides health/travel insurance. Travel allowances will be provided for those commuting to campuses other than Hongo and Yayoi.
Program Overview
The Amgen Scholars Program offers hundreds of undergraduates the chance to engage in scientific research projects at leading institutions worldwide.
Since its launch in 2006 in the U.S., 2008 in Europe, and 2015 in Japan at the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University, the program has expanded to other prestigious institutions in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, and Asia.
The program’s objective is to provide undergraduate students from various countries (including Japan) who are interested in or considering a career in biology or related sciences and planning to pursue graduate studies with eight weeks of biomedical research experience in basic and translational sciences.
Research opportunities will be provided by faculty members from the Graduate School of Medicine, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and the Institute of Industrial Science.
By the end of the summer program, students are expected to have acquired the knowledge and skills necessary for conducting research.
Additionally, students are encouraged to foster international friendships through collaborative experiences, paving the way for future collaborations in various contexts.
