“The Oosterhouw mansion in Leens, located in the northern Netherlands province of Groningen, is surrounded by a flat agricultural landscape approximately 10 km from the UNESCO heritage site of the Wadden Sea.
Built in 1868, Oosterhouw underwent its last renovation in 1912-1913, and since then, there have been no significant developments.
The current owners, who purchased the house a few years ago, aim to open it more to the public. The house, garden, and surrounding landscape are unique to this area and require protection and care.
Volunteers will participate in cleaning up and restoring the gardens to their former glory. Activities include groundwork like digging and leveling, gardening tasks such as weeding and pruning, and wood shredding and splitting.
Volunteers will work in the gardens five days a week, excluding weekends.
Accommodation, Food, and Transport Arrangements:
Volunteers will stay at Wongema, a working café in the small village of Hornhuizen. The entire group will share a dormitory. Clean towels will be provided, but participants should bring their own sheets or a sleeping bag.
A kitchen is available for cooking, and participants will take turns preparing meals from their home countries.
Everyone is expected to participate in the CCC (cooking-cleaning-crew). Bicycles will be provided for transportation between the accommodation and Oosterhouw (approximately 15 minutes).
Training During the Activity:
Participants will have access to online training modules from the European Solidarity Corps and/or SIW. Additionally, we will provide instruction on garden restoration.
Participant Profile: We seek volunteers with a green thumb who enjoy outdoor work and collaboration within a group. Openness to forming international friendships and an interest in restoring an old and beautiful garden to its former glory are essential
