An international Erasmus+ Training Course taking place in Helsinki, Finland, aims to help youth workers gain a deeper understanding of radicalisation processes, examine the factors influencing young people’s attitudes and behaviours, and develop practical intervention methods that can be applied in youth work settings.
Bringing together youth work professionals from different countries, the programme offers an intensive learning experience focused on radicalisation, violent extremism, online influences, critical thinking, youth resilience, and effective communication strategies.
Why Is Understanding Radicalisation Important in Youth Work?
Young people today are exposed to an unprecedented amount of information through social media platforms, online communities, digital networks, and various forms of online content. While these spaces can provide opportunities for learning and connection, they can also expose young people to polarising narratives, extremist ideologies, and harmful misinformation.
This Erasmus+ training course has been designed to support youth workers in understanding how radicalisation develops, identifying early warning signs, and responding constructively to challenging situations without damaging trust or dialogue with young people.
Throughout the programme, participants will explore ways to address sensitive topics, engage in meaningful conversations, and strengthen the resilience of young people facing social, cultural, or ideological pressures.
Key Topics Covered During the Training
During the course, participants will have the opportunity to examine and discuss:
- The concepts of radicalisation and violent extremism
- The influence of identity, beliefs, and narratives on young people
- The impact of online environments on attitudes and behaviours
- Risk factors and early indicators of radicalisation
- Effective communication and dialogue techniques for sensitive situations
- Approaches for strengthening psychological and social resilience among youth
- The role of Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps in fostering stronger and more resilient communities
The programme combines theoretical understanding with practical application, enabling participants to connect concepts directly to their professional work.
Experiential Learning Through Non-Formal Education
The training is based on non-formal education methodologies, ensuring that participants actively engage in the learning process rather than simply receiving information.
Throughout the programme, participants will take part in:
- Interactive learning sessions
- Facilitated discussions and debates
- Real-life case study analysis
- Simulation exercises
- Game-based learning activities
- Reflective and creative workshops
- Peer-learning sessions and international group work
This hands-on approach encourages participants to exchange experiences, learn from one another, and develop practical skills that can be transferred directly into youth work environments.
Innovative Educational Methods Included
One of the distinctive aspects of the training is its use of innovative educational tools and learning methods.
Participants will experience:
- RadEscape, an educational escape room designed to explore radicalisation pathways through experiential learning
- Dialogue facilitation activities using digital tools
- Practical exercises focused on beliefs, narratives, and identity formation
- Self-awareness and communication workshops aimed at strengthening professional competences
These methods are intended to create engaging learning experiences while helping participants better understand complex social and psychological processes.
What Will Participants Gain?
By the end of the training course, participants are expected to:
- Develop a stronger understanding of radicalisation processes
- Analyse the impact of narratives, beliefs, and identity on young people
- Gain practical tools for addressing challenging opinions and behaviours
- Improve communication and dialogue facilitation skills
- Learn strategies to strengthen youth resilience and critical thinking
- Create concrete action plans applicable to their own professional contexts
- Establish international connections with youth workers across Europe
- Increase their knowledge of Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps opportunities
International Networking and Exchange of Good Practices
Beyond professional development, the programme also provides a valuable platform for international cooperation and knowledge exchange. Participants will have the opportunity to discover successful youth work practices from different European countries, share experiences, and build partnerships that may lead to future Erasmus+ collaborations.
To support preparation and group building, selected participants will attend an online onboarding meeting on 13 October 2026, where they will receive detailed information about the training programme, practical arrangements, Erasmus+ opportunities, and fellow participants.
