Geysir Clubhouse: Empowering Mental Health Recovery
Geysir Clubhouse is a unique space where individuals with mental illness come to rebuild their lives.
Rather than being referred to as patients, participants are called “members,” emphasizing their strengths rather than their illness.
The core healing process at the clubhouse revolves around work opportunities, which are the result of collaborative efforts between members and staff.
One significant step toward greater independence involves transitional employment, where members engage in real jobs within the community.
Additionally, Geysir Clubhouse provides assistance in securing housing, advancing education, accessing psychiatric and medical care, and maintaining public benefits.
Volunteer Experience: Supporting Members
As a volunteer, you’ll work alongside Geysir Clubhouse members, participating in various tasks such as kitchen duties, administration, and cleaning.
While some tasks may seem repetitive, the underlying ideology focuses on enhancing communication, confidence, and work skills in a supportive environment.
Accommodation and Logistics
Volunteers will reside in a flat in Reykjavík, sharing common areas with other ESC volunteers. Each volunteer will have a private room.
Food expenses will be covered, and a bus card will be provided for transportation throughout the stay.
Training and Support
Volunteers are required to attend on-arrival training and midterm evaluations in Iceland. Ongoing support and training will be provided by Geysir Clubhouse staff, with personal mentoring from your assigned mentor and AUS, the coordinating organization.
Participant Profile
We seek mature, outgoing volunteers who are willing to work with individuals who have faced mental health challenges.
By working alongside members, volunteers contribute to improved communication skills, community engagement, and increased confidence.
While some tasks may feel repetitive, they play a crucial role in creating a supportive and educational community.
Volunteers can also initiate their own projects based on their interests and skills.
The key is to be an open and caring friend to the members.
